If you’re looking for a more balanced life - where your energy is high, your immune system is strong, and you’re feeling totally in tune with your mind and body, then it’s time to jump into the holistic health revolution. This ancient approach is all about nourishing your mind, body, and soul in a way that works together and gets to the root cause of any health issues or imbalances, rather than just focusing on one part of you.
In a world where we often treat symptoms instead of addressing the root causes, holistic health is a game-changer. In 2025, we’re done with quick fixes and magic bullets; this is about a whole lifestyle that focuses on natural health, prevention, and promoting long-term wellness through nutrition, movement, mindfulness, and practices that strengthen your immune system and mental health. So, let’s dive in with our in-house health coach Em at EmPower Healing…
What is holistic health?
At its core, holistic health is about looking at the whole picture - your physical, mental, and emotional health are all intertwined. This means that feeling stressed out, anxious, or out of sync mentally can show up physically, too. Think of it as treating your body as a whole system, where each part affects the other. This was known and recognised by our ancestors, but lost somewhere along the way with modern medicine treating symptoms individually instead. We can see this with examples of age-old sayings like ‘having butterflies in your stomach’ or ‘feeling the weight of the world on your shoulders’ - nerves can show up physically in our digestive system, and stress is often felt as shoulder and back tension.
By embracing holistic health, you support mental clarity, emotional balance, and physical vitality - all of which are essential for your overall wellness. The best part? It’s a permanent solution that’s all about the long-term game.
Where did holistic health come from?
Holistic health isn’t just a trendy buzzword… it has deep roots in ancient practices that have been fine-tuned over thousands of years. Two of the most prominent traditions that shaped the modern holistic health movement are Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).
Ayurveda, which originated in India over 5,000 years ago, is one of the oldest holistic systems of medicine. It is built on the belief that health is a balance of mind, body, and spirit. According to Ayurveda, every person has a unique constitution, or "dosha," which is a combination of the five elements: earth, water, fire, air, and ether. When these elements are in balance, a person experiences optimal health. Ayurveda’s approach to healing includes personalised nutrition, herbal remedies, yoga, and meditation, all designed to promote overall well-being and balance.
Similarly, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), with its roots in ancient China, focuses on the concept of Qi, the vital life force that flows through all living things. In TCM, health is seen as a harmonious balance of opposing forces—Yin (cool, calm, passive) and Yang (hot, active, energetic). Disease is thought to result from an imbalance between these forces. TCM incorporates practices like acupuncture, herbal medicine, Tai Chi, and Qi Gong to restore balance and vitality to the body and mind.
Both Ayurveda and TCM emphasise the interconnectedness of the body, mind, and spirit, advocating for a holistic approach to health that focuses on prevention, lifestyle changes, and natural healing. These time-tested traditions are the foundation of the modern holistic health movement, which seeks to integrate body and mind practices in a way that fosters long-term wellness and vitality.
The benefits of holistic health and why you should give it a go:
-
Improved mental and emotional health: Holistic health doesn’t just focus on your body; it also nurtures your mental health and emotional well-being. Practices like mindfulness, meditation, affirmation, and journaling can help reduce stress, improve mood, and boost emotional resilience. By working on your mind, your body benefits too!
-
Stronger immune system: When you balance your lifestyle and focus on nutrient-rich foods, you support your immune system naturally. Opting for a plant-rich diet and including superfoods like our sea moss and chaga mushroom in your diet can help protect your body from illness and keep you feeling energised and strong.
-
Increased energy and vitality: Tired of feeling sluggish or run-down? Optimising your nutrition and prioritising whole, unprocessed foods can help you break free from fatigue. Adding superfoods then takes it up another level… using products like shilajit, moringa and maca root which are packed with natural energy-boosting properties and promote vitality throughout the day.
-
Sustainable wellness: Rather than looking for a quick fix, holistic health offers sustainable, long-term solutions that create balance in your life. From stress management to plant-based nutrition, everything you incorporate is designed to support your body’s natural rhythm for years to come.
-
Better skin and gut health: As holistic health focuses on mind AND body, reducing stress and prioritising gut healing foods, this will transform your skin, digestion, and overall appearance. Superfoods like sea moss are known for their skin-healing properties, while moringa supports gut health and digestion. Cos who doesn’t want glowing skin and a bloat-free life?!
-
Optimised detox pathways: Our detox pathways (gut, kidneys, liver, lungs, lymph and skin) don’t get anywhere NEAR enough attention that they should! Holistic health not only works on these key pathways to get you feeling your best, but also gives you tools to continue to optimise them for life.
-
Toxin-free living: This lifestyle focuses on avoiding toxins and using natural products in place of chemical-heavy items, for sustainable, long-term health.
-
Getting back in touch with nature: The common theme with all of this is re-connecting with nature, which we’ve all sadly become so detached from. Nutrition, herbal medicine, detox tools and mindfulness techniques all bring us back to nature, which is an instant win for our health.
Why nutrition is key to holistic health
Ok so we’ve got the definition, origins and the benefits down, now let’s talk about nutrition - because it’s at the heart of holistic health. The foods you eat are your body’s fuel, and if you want to feel vibrant and energised, nourishing your body with the right nutrients is a must. Holistic nutrition focuses on whole foods and superfoods that are rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Unlike modern medicine which targets one area and causes a whole host of side-effects elsewhere, nutritional therapy can benefit your WHOLE body with many healthy fruits and veggies having multiple benefits for your entire system.
Once the basic nutrition is down, it’s time to step it up a gear and really get feeling 10/10 with energy levels through the roof, and that’s where superfoods come in!
